Jolin

Jean Jolin was born in 1645, probably in France, but I have not confirmed where he was born (if that is even possible). On 04 Apr 1690, he married Marie Madeleine Boileau Delagouppilliere at Saint Francis on the Island of Orleans (Saint-François-de-l’Île-d’Orléans) in the Montmorency district of Quebec province. Jean Jolin is the 5th great-grandfather of Hector Louis Paquin.

Marie was one of the so-called Filles Du Roi, which translates as “daughters of the king”, or King’s Daughters. These women were not the actual descendants of royalty, but rather poor women who could not afford to marry on their own. At that time, women needed a dowry to marry, and some women did not have it, perhaps the family was poor, she was an orphan, or something like that. There were many single men in New France, but few single women who wanted to move to the colony and face the hardships there, let alone pay for the privilege. So the king of France recruited single women to move there by paying for their passage, and providing them a dowry, hoping this plan would help populate the new settlements. The precise number of these women is not known, but it was about 850.

The lineage from Jean Jolin to Hector Louis Paquin is:

  • Jean Jolin and Marie Boileau Delagouppilliere Jolin had a son named Simon Jolin, born 01 May 1691.
  • Simon Jolin married Marguerite Élisabeth Allaire on 17 Aug 1711, and they had a son named Jean Baptiste Jolin, born 05 Jun 1716.
  • Jean Baptiste Jolin married Marie Geneviève Bonneau on 26 Apr 1740, and they had a son named Pierre Nicolas Jolin, born 16 Jun 1752.
  • Pierre Nicolas Jolin married Marie Ursule Proulx on 10 Jan 1774, and they had a son named Pierre Jolin, born 02 Oct 1774.
  • Pierre Jolin married Marguerite Roi on 03 May 1831, and they had a son named Henri Jolin, born 09 Feb 1834.
  • Henri Jolin married Rose Delima Girard Dit Lasonne on 19 Jun 1854, and they had a daughter named Elzire Stéphanie Jolin, born 02 Jun 1857.
  • Elzire Stéphanie Jolin moved from Quebec to MA about 1873, and married Nestor Joseph Paquin on 15 Jun 1880 in Fall River, MA. Their son Hector Louis Paquin was born 05 Nov 1884 in Fall River.

Another child of Elzire and Nestor Paquin is Alma Vivian Paquin, born 04 May 1893. Alma married George Earl Holder about 1911 in IA. George Holder’s brother Jesse William Holder is the father of Julia Mabel Holder, who had a son (Thomas Hector Welch) with Hector Louis Paquin who is Alma Vivian Paquin’s brother.

paquin-elzire-jolin-1930The photo is Elzire Jolin Paquin, taken shortly before she died. Elzire was born in Quebec, and lived in MA, SD, and IA, moving to Sioux City between 1901 and 1905. Elzire’s husband Nestor Paquin died in Sioux City in 1922, and Elzire was still in Sioux City on the 1930 census on 04 Apr 1930. However, she died 01 Oct 1930 in Chicago, IL, at the home of her son Hector Louis Paquin there, and was buried in Sioux City. The photo is stamped “Sykes and Fowler, Chicago” so must have been taken when she was in Chicago in 1930, when she was 73 years old.
